Future of Networks 1: Optical Network Fabric

In a series of guest lectures, we bring a Bell Labs perspective on the latest state-of-the-art in three different domains of future networks: optical network fabric, 6G communication and sensing, and unified networking.

In the first presentation, we focus on the optical network fabric domain, which includes submarine networks, regional and metro networks, data center networks and optical access networks. After introducing systems concepts and the Shannon limit for optical fiber, we discuss the challenges and state-of-the-art technologies to improve the capacity for optical transmission along three dimensions: spectral efficiency, bandwidth, and spatial multiplexing. We conclude with passive optical networks to achieve high bitrate access networks at low cost.
