About

Jan 2023 – The AP/COM/MTT (IEEE Antennas and Propagation Society, IEEE Communications Society and IEEE Microwave Theory and Technology Society) Student Chapter Leuven is officially formed!
The AP/COM/MTT Student Chapter Leuven aims to inform students and young professionals about scientific research and progress in all fields of electromagnetics and communications. The chapter also hopes to familiarize students with the IEEE activities held by the corresponding societies, inspiring and encouraging them to pursue a career as an Electrical and Electronics Engineer. To that purpose, future activities include, but are not limited to webinars, company visits, symposia and conferences.

Sevda Seyyedmasoumian – Chair
She received her B.Sc. in Telecommunications Engineering from Tabriz University, Iran, in 2016, followed by an M.Sc. in Optical Communications Engineering in 2019, with a focus on nanoantenna design. Currently, she is pursuing a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering at KU Leuven, Belgium, specializing in microwave biosensors and microwave interferometry for cancer detection. Her primary research interests include microwave dielectric characterization, biosensors, and microwave interferometric techniques for life science applications.

Benyamin Harkinezhad – Vice Chair
Benyamin earned his bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Zanjan in 2017, where he co-founded the Robotics Association and worked on mobile robotics and embedded systems. He pursued a master’s at K. N. Toosi University of Technology, researching the Seebeck effect in microfluidic systems for sensing and energy harvesting, while also contributing to humidity and gas sensing projects. After graduating in 2019, he worked at Ehya Darmane Pishrafteh on medical equipment until 2021. Benyamin is now a joint PhD candidate at KU Leuven and the University of Melbourne, developing flexible microwave biosensors. He also serves as co-chair of the IEEE MTT-AP-COM Chapter at KU Leuven, supporting collaboration in microwave engineering and applied electromagnetics.

Haoqiu Xiong – Secretary
He received the M.Sc. (2022) in electronic engineering from Southern University of Science and Technology, Shenzhen, China. Currently, he is a PhD student working on Integrated Sensing and Communication at the department of electrical engineering, KU Leuven, Belgium.

Raquel Marina Noguera Oishi – Treasurer
Raquel received her B.Sc. in Industrial Electronics and Automation Engineering from the University of Castilla-La Mancha, Spain, and her M.Sc. in Electronic Systems Engineering from the Polytechnic University of Madrid, Spain, with an Iberdrola scholarship for academic excellence. She is currently pursuing a Ph.D. at WaveCoRe, KU Leuven, focusing on Over-the-Air synchronization for future 6G networks. Her research specializes in developing advanced methods and algorithms for distributed synchronization in O-RAN architectures. Her interests include wireless communications, signal processing, and mmWave technologies.

Marie Mertens – Publicity
Marie obtained her bachelor’s in Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences at the KU Leuven Engineering Sciences Faculty in 2019. In the first year of her master’s in Biomedical Engineering, she studied in KTH in Stockholm for one year with the Erasmus exchange program. She completed the second year at KU Leuven (2021, magna cum laude). She is now pursuing the degree of PhD in a collaboration between KU Leuven (BE) and Polytechnique Montréal (CA). She aims to electromagnetically characterize and model artificial tissues in a broadband frequency range.
