Introduction to 5G

Abstract
5G has now become a reality, with over 1 billion 5G subscriptions worldwide. While previous generations of mobile networks were mainly used for people communications, 5G is enabling digitalization for society and business, with new applications such as e.g. virtual/augmented reality, industrial applications, remote driving, etc.…
In this lecture, we will describe the evolution of the mobile network architecture towards 5G, and elaborate on the drivers and applications of 5G.
Biography of the Lecturer
Serge Vanhoffelen is the Head of Customer Solutions at Ericsson Belux. He has been working on the 5G Program for Belgium since 2015 and is now leading the core network business, innovation and regulatory activities. Previously he held different positions in R&D, mobile network roll-out, operations and sales at Lucent Technologies and Ericsson. He has an MSc in electrical engineering from KU Leuven.
