On Tuesday 29th of April at 8pm the next Soireé Technique on Big Data will be held at the auditorium of Computer Science.
There will be three speakers, each talking about their expertise in big data. The presentations will cover both the current academic research and the practices used in industry. We have 2 speakers from the KU Leuven, prof. Hendrik Blockeel from the Department of Computer Science and prof. Jan Aerts from the department of ESAT. From the industry, there will be Tine Van Dyck from SAS. SAS is the market leader in advanced analytics software. SAS software is used by 79 percent of the fortune 500 companies and our speaker can therefore give some insight on Big Data in the industry.
The lecture will start at 20h00, each presentation will take about 30 minutes. After the presentations there will be a small panel discussion with the speakers. Afterwards, there is a small reception in the foyer to meet and talk to the speakers.
professor Hendrik Blockeel (Computer Science, KU Leuven) - How Big Data is changing our Lives
The first speaker, Hendrik Blockeel, will talk about different technologies that are currently being used and researched.
The term "Big Data" has become omnipresent in the last few years. But what exactly does it mean? Vast digital collections of data have been around for decades. What causes the recent surge of interest in "big data"? How is big data different from simply making the existing technology for data processing scale to larger amounts of data? And most of all: what potential does it hold for our society in the near future? This talk will discuss some of the history, technology and challenges behind the hype.
professor Jan Aerts (ESAT, KU Leuven) - Visual Analytics
The second speaker, Jan Aerts, will talk about Visual Analytics, a technology that uses visual representation to help get information out of data.
Tine Van Dyck (SAS Institute) - Big Data and Big Analytics
The last speaker, Tine Van Dyck, will tell about the technologies that SAS has developed and how these technologies are being used in other companies.
Data is only worth as much as what you manage to get out of it.
The data deluge is a huge challenge for many organizations, for IT departments as well as Marketing, Sales and other departments. To be successful today, a company needs to be able to embrace the digital age and know how to deal with the integration of many types of data and data sources; transactional, structured or not, internal or external, on-line, mobile and most of the time in real-time.
Let’s look beyond the hype; how to handle these data, how to use analytics to create value from data, how to organize yourself and your teams to address this fast changing reality.
The lecture will start at 20h00, each presentation will take about 30 minutes. After the presentations there will be a small panel discussion with the speakers. After the discussion there will be a small reception in the foyer to meet the speakers.
Registration is required.
